Before a summer road trip from Bremerton, check seven things a week ahead: tires (tread and pressure), engine oil, coolant, brakes, battery, all exterior lights, and your belts and hoses. Handle anything that needs a shop — an overdue oil change, a marginal tire, a squealing brake — about a week before you leave, and do the quick hands-on checks (fluids, tire pressure, lights) a day or two before departure. A 30-minute inspection now is far cheaper than a breakdown on I-5 or a mountain pass in July.

Tires, engine oil, coolant, brakes, and battery are the top five. Heat and long highway miles stress all of them, and a failure in any one can end a trip. Lights, belts, and hoses round out the full seven-point check.
Do the quarter test: insert a quarter upside down into the tread grooves. If the top of Washington’s head is visible, the tread is too low — replace the tire. Also check for cuts, bulges, and correct pressure (cold) per the driver’s-door sticker.
If you’ll hit your next scheduled oil change during the trip, or you’re within about 500–1,000 miles of it, change it beforehand. Fresh oil protects the engine best during the sustained high-heat, high-speed miles a summer road trip puts on it.
