Check Engine Light Diagnostics — B&B Auto Repair
Real Diagnosis, Not Just a Code Reader — Since 1983
A check engine light doesn’t tell you what’s wrong — it tells you something is wrong. Too many shops (and most dealerships) plug in a code reader, write down whatever code pops up, and quote you a parts replacement based on the code description alone. That’s why customers often pay for parts that didn’t actually fix the problem. At B&B Auto Repair, we diagnose — we don’t just code-read.
Our ASE Certified technicians use professional-grade scan tools, live data analysis, fuel trim analysis, pressure testing, and real diagnostic procedure to isolate the true cause of a check engine light. A P0420 code might be a catalytic converter — but it might also be an upstream O2 sensor, an exhaust leak, or a lean fuel condition. We find the actual failure, fix it once, and make sure the light stays off. Kitsap County drivers have trusted B&B with their diagnostics since 1983.

Serving Bremerton, Silverdale, and All of Kitsap County
B&B Auto Repair is located at 299 South National Avenue in Bremerton. Drivers from Silverdale, Port Orchard, Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island, Kingston, and across the Kitsap Peninsula bring us their check engine lights because we actually diagnose instead of guess.
A check engine light that’s ignored can turn into real damage: a misfire damages the catalytic converter, a lean condition damages pistons and valves, a vacuum leak damages the PCV system. Early, accurate diagnosis is the cheapest option every time.
The B&B Difference: Real Diagnostic Procedure
When another shop tells you to replace a catalytic converter, an O2 sensor, a MAF sensor, and a purge valve — all for the same code — that’s not diagnosis; that’s a guessing game at your expense. At B&B, we isolate the single root cause before we recommend parts, and we back the diagnosis with data you can see.
Call or text B&B Auto Repair at (360) 377-0682 to schedule a check engine light diagnosis. We’ll find the real problem and fix it right the first time.

I appreciate B & B Auto Repair's professionalism and promptness. They have helped me out massively, on a few occasions with my vehicle. Very notably, when I needed a pre-purchase inspection done on a vehicle, they were able to help me same day, though that was not an expected or normal task to add me in so quickly. It made a world of difference to help me through my rough times of having a broken down vehicle and needing to buy another.Posted on Google![]()

We have recently had both my van and my husband's car inspected and repaired by B&B Auto Repair. Both experiences were excellent. The work on my vehicle appears to have resulted in better gas mileage, both highway and local use. B&B just replaced a defective part after several week of use at no cost to me and at my convenience.Posted on Google![]()

Real engine light diagnosis — find the actual problem the first time.
Why Most Shops Get Engine Light Diagnosis Wrong
The dealership model (and the chain-shop model) for engine light diagnosis is broken. A service writer plugs in a scan tool, pulls the code, looks up the “most common fix” for that code in their catalog, and quotes you for that part. If the part doesn’t fix the problem, the car comes back, and the next guess gets made. You pay for every guess.
A classic example: a P0420 catalytic converter code. The “standard” dealership fix is to replace the catalytic converter at $1,500–$3,500. But P0420 has multiple possible causes — a lazy upstream O2 sensor, an exhaust leak before the rear sensor, a coolant leak contaminating the cat, a lean fuel trim condition, or misfires burning oil into the cat. The actual cat may or may not be the root cause.
At B&B Auto Repair, we run the full diagnostic procedure before recommending parts:
- Read all modules for related codes and pending codes
- Analyze live data — fuel trims, O2 waveforms, misfire counters, MAF reading
- Check for exhaust leaks and secondary fuel system issues
- Evaluate any related components that could mimic the complaint
When we recommend a part, we can explain exactly why that part — and only that part — is the correct fix.
Common Check Engine Light Causes We Diagnose
- Misfire codes (P0300–P0312) — Ignition, fuel, or mechanical. Each is diagnosed differently.
- O2 sensor codes (P013X, P014X, P015X) — Often the sensor, but sometimes wiring or a vacuum leak.
- Catalytic converter codes (P0420, P0430) — Real diagnosis before the expensive cat replacement.
- EVAP codes (P0440-series, P0455, P0457) — Loose gas cap, vent valve, purge valve, or a cracked hose. Smoke testing identifies the leak.
- MAF / airflow codes (P0101, P0102, P0171, P0174) — Could be a dirty MAF, a vacuum leak, or a fuel delivery issue.
- Transmission codes (P07XX) — Solenoid, sensor, TCM, or internal — we isolate which.
- Knock sensor codes (P0325-series) — Often the sensor, sometimes a wiring or engine mechanical issue.
- VVT / timing codes (P0010-series, P0020-series) — Oil control solenoids, low oil pressure, or timing component wear.
What Our Bremerton Customers Ask Most
We charge a flat diagnostic fee for professional analysis — significantly less than the cost of replacing parts that don’t fix the problem. If we perform the repair, the diagnostic fee is often credited toward the work. Contact us at (360) 377-0682 for specifics.
A free code read is not a diagnosis. It’s the starting point. A P0420 code could be any of six different failures; a P0171 could be any of eight. Real diagnosis — live data, smoke testing, pressure testing, and analysis — is what tells you which specific failure you actually have. Paying once for accurate diagnosis is far cheaper than paying repeatedly for parts that don’t fix the problem.
Not advisable. Many ‘silent’ codes — like a lazy O2 sensor or a small EVAP leak — lead to bigger problems if ignored. A misfire that seems minor can destroy a catalytic converter (a $1,500+ part) in short order. Get it diagnosed early and fix it affordably.
Yes. Our scan tools cover BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VW, Audi, Volvo, and Porsche, including manufacturer-specific codes and enhanced data that basic OBD-II readers can’t access.
Yes. When we diagnose and repair a check engine light complaint, the repair is backed by our 2-Year / 24,000-Mile warranty on parts and labor.
